Sunrise Oath: Why I Run Before the World Wakes Up (and You Should Too, Eventually)

Posted July 4, 2025 • Rituals & Routines

There’s a split second around 6:00 a.m. when my alarm serenades me, and every cell in my body stages a polite request for five more minutes. By 6:16, shoes laced and playlist queued, I’m out there, chasing the golden hour light while Roodepoort slowly stretches awake. That sixteen-minute swing? That’s where the magic lives, transforming me from a cozy burrito to a kilometre-crunching machine – all without the pre-dawn headlamp struggle (unless it's race day, of course!).

The Early Bird Gets the... Less Crowded Park?

Okay, maybe not *all* the PRs, but there's a certain unfair advantage to these early morning patrols. You ride that natural energy wave, snag cooler temps before the Highveld heat kicks in, and own the still-quiet roads like you're in a music video. Plus, it feels like a secret club. Shhh, don't tell the late sleepers.

My Wake-Up & Run Power Protocol

This isn't just about lacing up. It’s a finely tuned symphony (or a frantic dash, depending on how much I hit snooze).

        > **Audible Wisdom:** Lately, my pre-run thoughts are buzzing with concepts from *Thinking, Fast and Slow* by Daniel Kahneman. It’s like my slow, deliberate System 2 brain is plotting the run, while my fast, intuitive System 1 just wants to get out there and chase that sunrise! It's all about that mental warm-up.

Those Sweet, Sweet Micro-Wins

It’s not just about the kilometres logged. It's the ripple effect that makes it worth fighting the duvet monster.

        > **Soundtrack Spotlight:** My usual wake-up and get-out-the-door hype? Something chill like Kygo's "Firestone." It's got that perfect blend of calm and build-up, getting my mind and body ready to go from zero to hero.

Your Turn: Embrace the Early (But Not Too Early!) Start!

Feeling inspired? Lay your running gear out tonight. Set a "lights-out" alarm (yes, really!). And for extra accountability, text a friend your meet-up corner – even if it's just "my couch and the front door." Trust me, that tiny bit of external pressure beats the snooze button every single time, even at 6 AM.

**Closer:** Running early isn’t about rigid discipline—it’s about gifting future-you an undefeated head start. And maybe, just maybe, earning a few shiny new PRs like my 1K (2:11!) or 5K (12:41!) along the way. Go get 'em!

About Kagiso

Hi, I’m Kagiso—recovering couch potato turned distance‑runner‑in‑progress. My PBs are a testament to consistency and a little bit of stubbornness: Fastest 1K → 2:11, Fastest 5K → 12:41, Fastest 10K → 28:11, Fastest Half Marathon → 1:06:51, and my Longest Run (so far!) at 35.12 kilometres. When I’m not logging early morning km, I’m sipping overly‑fancy coffee, binging audiobooks on mindset (currently diving deep into *The Psychology of Money*!), and blogging the highs & lows of the journey. Thanks for reading—let’s earn our finish‑line smiles together. 🏃🏾‍♂️
